Trail Highlights
Inspiration Point is one of Santa Barbara’s most popular hikes, offering a steady climb with panoramic rewards. The trail follows the historic Tunnel Trail through chaparral hillsides and sandstone formations, with open views of the Santa Barbara coastline almost the entire way. At the summit, a broad sandstone outcrop provides a perfect perch to take in sweeping vistas of the Pacific Ocean, Channel Islands, and the Santa Ynez Mountains.
Trail Description
The route begins at the Tunnel Trailhead at the end of Tunnel Road. The first stretch is a wide dirt path with a moderate incline, passing through oak and chaparral. After about half a mile, the trail narrows and climbs more steeply via switchbacks. At 1.5 miles, look for a signed junction—take the spur trail toward Inspiration Point. The final half mile gains elevation quickly before opening onto the sandstone overlook that marks the summit. This is an ideal spot for a break, with expansive views of both the coastline and inland mountains.
Directions & Parking
From downtown Santa Barbara, take Mission Street east and turn left on State Street. Continue to Foothill Road (Highway 192), then turn right on Tunnel Road. Follow Tunnel Road to its end, where you’ll find the Tunnel Trailhead. Parking is very limited—only a small lot at the trailhead plus shoulder parking along Tunnel Road. Arrive early, especially on weekends, and pay close attention to signage; parking enforcement is common.
