Trail Highlights
The Franklin Trail is one of Carpinteria’s most beloved routes for outdoor enthusiasts. It offers a direct connection from the coastal town to the rugged beauty of the Santa Ynez Mountains. This shared-use trail welcomes hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians, and trail runners, making it a popular year-round destination. The trail provides sweeping ocean views, lush foothills, and a rewarding ascent to the crest of the mountains, where it eventually links to the Santa Ynez River.

Backpackers can use this trail to access the backcountry, with Alder Creek Camp providing a rustic rest point. Wildlife is abundant, and depending on the season, hikers may encounter blackberries, wildflowers, and diverse native vegetation.

Trail Description
The journey begins at Franklin Creek Park in Carpinteria, where the trail quickly ascends through tight switchbacks to a network of utility roads. These well-marked roads wind through the foothills for the first 5.5 miles before transitioning into a steeper, more rugged single-track climb toward the mountain crest. This upper section is more challenging, featuring uneven terrain and natural obstacles.

At around 8 miles, the trail intersects with the Divide Peak OHV Route. From here, it can be difficult to locate the continuation of the trail, but following the flatter, overgrown section westward will reveal the path. Alder Creek Camp, a remote but scenic resting spot, lies about half a mile beyond this point. The descent into Alder Creek can be obstructed by thick blackberry growth, making navigation slightly tricky.

Directions
The trailhead is located at Franklin Creek Park in Carpinteria, California. From Highway 101, take the exit for Carpinteria Avenue and head north on Linden Avenue. Turn right on Foothill Road and follow it to the park entrance. Parking is available near the trailhead, but as this is a popular route, arriving early is recommended.
