Trail Highlights
The Carpinteria Salt Marsh Trail is a serene escape nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the city of Carpinteria. This 230-acre estuary is one of the last remaining coastal wetlands in Southern California, offering a peaceful route for walkers, birders, photographers, and nature lovers. The flat, well-maintained trail winds through the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Preserve, providing panoramic views of the Santa Ynez Mountains, marshland, and the ocean.

A visit during different tide levels offers contrasting experiences, with high tide bringing waterfowl closer to shore and low tide revealing the muddy flats teeming with life. The area is a prime habitat for shorebirds and other wildlife, with several interpretive signs and observation areas placed along the way.

Guided nature walks are offered by the City of Carpinteria every Saturday at 10 a.m., weather permitting. These provide an opportunity to learn more about the ecological importance of this unique coastal habitat.

Trail Description
The trail begins at the end of Sandyland Road near Ash Avenue, just steps from the beach. From the trailhead, visitors follow a wide dirt and boardwalk path that gently meanders through the salt marsh. Benches and observation points are placed throughout, encouraging quiet reflection and wildlife viewing.

The trail is entirely flat with no natural obstacles, making it ideal for all ages and fitness levels. Although the path is not formally rated for accessibility, its wide and even surface may accommodate some mobility aids. Expect full sun exposure—there is little to no shade along the route, so sun protection is recommended.

After reaching the turnaround point, you can return the same way, or take advantage of nearby beach access to extend your outing.
