Serving Santa Barbara County
We provide services for trail projects located in Santa Barbara County.
Discovery
Designing a wayfinding system for trails is much more than just putting up a few signs. The first step is always discovery. We lace up our boots and hit the trails ourselves, mapping every turn, every hidden viewpoint, and every spot where a hiker might pause and wonder, "Which way now?"
Strategy
Once we have an understanding of the trail network, we move into strategy. This is where we brainstorm: What kind of information is essential? Where are the critical decision points? Should a sign tell you the mileage to the next vista or just the direction to the parking lot? We consider the materials – identifying something durable that blends with the environment. We sketch out ideas for different sign types, from maps for trailhead kiosks to subtle, reassuring markers. We imagine the visual language – what fonts, colors, and symbols will be clear and consistent?
Design Development
An experienced team of graphic designers works on design development. Every sign is drawn out in detail, specifying its exact dimensions, the type of wood or metal, and how it will be anchored to signposts. We create the actual graphics, ensuring maps are intuitive and the text is legible from a distance. Importantly, we select the precise location for every sign, taking into account sightlines and their impact on the natural beauty. This phase also includes budgeting and planning for the creation and installation of the signs, as well as their long-term maintenance.
Implementation
Finally, working in partnership with sign fabricators, the components of the wayfinding system are implemented. This means overseeing the fabrication and installation, making sure what was designed on paper comes to life beautifully and correctly on the trail. And once everything is in place, we go back to the users, observing and asking, "Did we get it right?" Ultimately, a successful wayfinding system isn't just about signs; it's about making every journey on the trail feel clear, enjoyable, and safe.
