2026 Ushers in Landslides and Destruction at Baron Ranch
According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest rainfall fell along the Gaviota Coast and in the foothills and mountains over a three-day period ending at midnight Monday, January 5th. Rainfall exceeded 8" in the mountains above Baron Ranch trails. The photos show landslides, rockfalls, and erosion. Some of the issues can be repaired by volunteers. The major problems will require trail crews to work for up to 10 weeks to repair the 11-mile-long trail network. The slide areas will require an excavator and crew to regrade the scarred landscape to ensure safe passage. Baron Ranch Trails are closed as of January 7th.
