2024 Project Update
In the Spring of 2024, the Lompoc Trails group initiated discussions with the County of Santa Barbara's Planning and Development Department to secure permits for building four miles of trail on AG-2 zoned property at the southern end of Z Street in Lompoc. In August, a permit application was submitted with the understanding that the permitting expense would be lowered in exchange for the County receiving an offer to dedicate 4 miles of public trail easements. In the fall, field work began laying out routes on the east and west sides of the paved road to Lookout Point. After the routes were field verified, the trails were cut through the poison oak-laced chaparral with the aid of a mini-excavator and trail crew members using hand tools. A summary of the project plan is posted here.
2023 Project Update
After receiving grant funding and donations from Community Members, the Lompoc Trails group hired Heidi Jones with Meraki Land Use Consulting to oversee the trail permitting process. The plan was to build trails on an AG-2 zoned property, which required a permit from the County of Santa Barbara. Report preparation with land surveyors, archaeologists, and biologists was initiated.
Project History
Location:
Lompoc, California
Description:
In partnership with the Lompoc Trails group, the Trails Council initiated formal trail planning, mapping, and cutting a preliminary line for the first of five trails in August of 2022. The objective was to plan and brush a trail route for a distance of up to one mile with an average grade not exceeding 10%. Where possible, a lower average of 8% will be pursued. The proposal included lightly brushing and flagging a route for the Lompoc Trails Committee to walk and approve before clearing the chaparral with a minimum of 24 inches (shoulder width) to allow people to walk the preliminary route. The Trails Council funded the labor and material costs of creating the initial line (aka P-Line). The initial plan is to build four miles of trail on the 83-acre privately owned property.
