Trail Highlights
Seven Falls is one of Santa Barbara’s most cherished natural landmarks, offering a scenic and adventurous hike through Mission Canyon. The hike follows the west fork of Mission Creek, where years of erosion have sculpted the resistant Coldwater Sandstone into deep pools, smooth potholes, and cascading falls. The result is a stunning series of seven waterfalls nestled among lush greenery, including ferns and moss-covered rock faces. The hike provides both serene beauty and the opportunity for light scrambling, making it a favorite among locals.
Trail Description
The trail begins on Tunnel Road and follows the Jesusita Trail for about 200 yards before dropping into the west fork of Mission Canyon. The easiest way to reach Seven Falls is by following the creek, which involves rock hopping, creek crossings, and some light scrambling. A side trail through the chaparral provides an alternative route but eventually requires hikers to return to the creek for the final approach.
During the spring and summer, the falls usually have enough water for swimming, and adventurous hikers sometimes slide off the lower falls into the deep pools below—always checking conditions first for safety.
Directions
From the Santa Barbara Mission, drive up Mission Canyon Road to Foothill Road and turn right. A few hundred yards later, turn left near the fire station. Follow Mission Canyon Road to Tunnel Road, which is about half a mile before the Botanic Garden. Continue to the end of Tunnel Road and park legally—tickets are frequently issued for improper parking.
